Last Pyburn news

This should clear up a lot of questions.  The 3rd grade party is for 3rd graders only and the parent party is for parents and is in our class and very casual-- just hanging out and having a few snacks. Students will have specials everyday this week from 2:55-3:40.

PLEASE let me know as soon as possible if your student is missing any days this week!!!!

EOG Information (this flyer was sent home)

    Test-Taking Tips for Students
  1. Read everything! (Title, introduction, italics, and subtitles)
  2. Read the question carefully. Read all the choices and choose the best answer. Look for key words in the question. Be sure you understand what is being asked. Use all the information given.
  3. Never leave an answer blank. It is better to make an educated guess than leave a question blank.
  4. When unsure of an answer, eliminate choices you know are wrong.
  5. If you do not know the answer, but do know the process, try working back from the answer choices.
  6. If you cannot solve a problem, go to the next one and return to the skipped problem later. Be sure to skip that number on your answer sheet.
  7. Check your place to be sure you mark the answer number that goes with the question number.
  8. Check your answer to see if it makes sense. Work problems out on paper or in your booklet. Double, even triple check your computations. Refer back to reading selections to find proof of your answer choice.
  9. Keep an eye on the time. If you finish before the testing session is over, start at the beginning. Reread selections, questions, and choices. Check answers and think again about the questions you thought were hardest.
How to Help Your Child Get Ready for the EOG (Share with your parent/guardian)
Research shows students do best on tests when they receive lots of encouragement from parents and teachers and develop a positive attitude.
Remember to stay positive even if you feel a bit worried.  Here are some things you can say that may be helpful:
·         You are going to do just fine because you worked hard and behaved well at school this year.
·         Your teacher made sure you have been taught everything on the EOG. There should be no surprises.
·         You do not have to get every question correct to get a big score.
·         I know you will do a great job.
Preparing for testing days
Reading EOG on Monday, June 2nd starts at 9:30am
Math EOG on Tuesday, June 3rd starts at 9:30am
·   Get your child to bed in time to get a good night’s sleep.
·   Make sure they have a calm morning at home on test days.
·   Make sure they eat a healthy breakfast.

·   Make sure they are wearing comfortable clothes that are suitable for the day’s climate

Parent Homework: Parents your help is needed!  This is your child's first experience with the EOG's and I would love your help in making it memorable!  Please write your child a letter of encouragement (a little love note!) that I can put on your child's desk on the morning of the EOG's.  Write whatever you think would help your child relax and put a smile on their face (for example: a special message, a joke, add a drawing, etc.).  Please place it in a sealed envelope and have it turned in to me by this Thursday.  This will be something so special for the children and help them go into the EOG's knowing they have their biggest cheerleaders right there with them! Thank you so much for your support!

Performance Tomorrow: Join us in watching the chorus, drama and dance clubs in the school musical tomorrow at 9:30.

Art and Science Expo Tomorrow:  The Expo is a showcase of student work and activities - showing how our Douglas students have learned about science through the arts this year. Parents, stop by in The Media Center tomorrow to see our hard work!

Media Center Books: All school Media Center books were due today.  Please help your child check at home for any misplaced books.

Scholastic Book Orders: I will be sending one last order form for Scholastic books tomorrow. Please take the time and see what books your student would enjoy over the summer.

Pyburn News 5-12-14

Please be sure your student does the back of their math HW tonight. 2 students were out of the room for part of my math instruction and the back of their page is blank and that is ok.

I stapled this to your student's Monday folder but just a double FYI
Please be sure that you are correcting the tests that are sent home to be signed each week with your student. Your signature means that you saw your student’s score and helped them correct their answers on a scrap sheet of paper. Check their agendas to see when the corrected work is due.--hint hint this week they are due Thursday. Thank you for your support at home.

Field day is canceled for tomorrow

Due to the weather and how wet the fields are they have cancelled field day for tomorrow. The make up day will be next Monday, May 5 from 12:30 to 2. Please be sure your student dresses comfortably on Monday and brings tennis shoes, a towel and a water bottle. You may even want to send a change of clothes with them.

The theme for field day this year is a luau. So if anyone would like to donate any tropical fruit for us to have as a special treat that would be great.

Fuchsia groups finished reading Flat Stanley and made a poster to present it to us. Awesome job!!!

You can see a few of the post it notes (colors ordinate with their book club color group) in their books. Every week each book club picks a strategy that they want to focus on and they work on creating notes for that strategy to share back with their group next Wednesday. Strategies include cause and effect, main idea and details, story elements, compare and contrast etc... Similar to the skills off their reading logs.
