Fall Celebration

We had a great afternoon making leaf collages, listening to Halloween stories, and eating a healthy snack that looks like candy corn. Thank you so much to Sam, Lauren, and Samantha's moms for helping us. Also thank you to everyone that sent the supplies in. We couldn't have had this much fun without y'all :)

Notes from white board
Notes from the worksheet done together in class.

Pyburn News 10-21-13

October 21, 2013
Daily 5 Literacy/Writing: This past week we concentrated folktales and fables; reading these stories and learning the lesson or message. We will continue to look at those stories along with myths. We are also going to be working with prefixes and suffixes to help us understand new words. Our student’s do not need to memorize them (they are posted on our wall), but they do need to know how to use them.
PLEASE help your student with their written reading homework. Have them discuss with you the answer before writing it on a scrap sheet of paper. Then you can help them edit their answers and add details to create complete sentences.
We have learned how to be a self editor of our personal narratives. As a class we will be working with peers to help each other edit before the teacher edit and writing our final drafts.
Math: We are continuing to learn strategies for solving multiplication problems this week.  We are working on building a firm foundation of the concept, and eventually move on to memorizing the facts. Some of the strategies, for example: making equal groups ("circles and stars"), drawing arrays (equal rows and columns), as well as writing equations. We will also be using number lines to show skip counting with some of the multiplication facts. Check our blog for more information about multiplication and division.
Science: Our students are learning about the parts of a seed and plant.
Important Reminders:
10/22-10/23 Case 21 testing (please be sure your student arrives on time after eating a healthy breakfast)
Thursday 10/24 McTeacher’s Night 4:30-7:30 (I will be there from 6:30-7:30)- see flyer in Monday folder for more info.
Monday 10/28 Workday/No school
Friday 11/1 Field Trip
Friday 11/8 report cards go home
Other news : Is anyone else interested in the chaperoning for our field trip? We will leave school at about 9:15 and drive to Wake Forest High School for our performance from 10:30-11:15 and be back to school around 12:00. The chaperones drive separately and have to have been cleared with a background check this year.
I am thinking about doing a fun Fall celebration/craft/snack on 10/31 in the afternoon 2-2:45ish… I have talked to a few parents (please email me again because I have forgotten who said what) about helping and/or donating items. Is anyone else able to come in or donate some items? I will see how much help I can get before going further J
Class/teacher Wish List
-prize box items (small toys, erasers, games, puzzles, mechanical pencils, small individual wrapped candy)
-clear plastic sheet protectors
-colored pencils
-Petsmart gift card to help Ms. Pyburn with the cost of buying all the replacement fish...
Thank you!

Fables

Our key details helped us decide what the lesson/message was of the fable.

Above is the video we watched in class on 10/16/13 and talked about the difference from the story (pictured at the top) we read on 10/15/13.

Patterns

Sorry for the messiness... But here are the notes from our math lesson today about different types of patterns.

Reading Homework

Please help your student with this homework!!!!!! We talked and talked about it, but encourage them to use a scrap sheet of paper to do a rough draft and then copy on the paper. I would like to see all their work (rough drafts too) stamped to their paper. This is not to be done in one night but a little each night. Also please be see they are using third grade sentences!!! Thank you for your support with helping our students become more comfortable with doing written responses.

Story cubes

Please use the story cube sent home with your student today to help with "checking for understanding"

Down-n-Around the Pond

Today we had two special guests come in and do a teamwork, music, anti bully, rhythm, read aloud activity with us. We got to use our body as drums and then use musical instruments to make a rhythm with the story!!! So fun!!

Reading with Expression

This week we have been working on reading aloud with expression. Here is a poster that has helped us when reading with our partners. Try to encourage your student to read aloud with expression even of it means backing up and rereading. Below are some fun fluency cards to help too.

Syllables and vowel blends

We are working/reviewing grouping syllables together to help us read a word. Here is a great website with a few games that can help your student practice at home.
